16. Gallery

Reflecting on critique:

My portraiture work was frequently compared to portraits from centuries ago. E.G. Renaissance portraits, Victorian portraits, the Mona Lisa.

I decided to experiment with portraits from the National Portrait Gallery. These images are photographs that I have taken, from my visit to London on a gallery crawl.

Some are ancient, and some are more contemporary, but I found these images specifically interesting because of how they capture the person's personality.

All of the styles are different, some use different colours / shapes / styles (some are realistic, some are more abstract) but they all struck me with more passion than just "capturing a person" - by looking at these images I can see their personality and soul shining through too.

This image reminds me of a pin up girl, only fully clothed. The way she is posing is glamorous and happy, full of energy. I think that the flowers compliment her naturally compelling, vibrant attitude.

This piece is my favourite of them all, despite the fact it is the most contemporary.

The eyes are far too big to be realistic which makes the piece SLIGHTLY uncanny, but very expressive. The way that she is looking away from the camera makes us feel like voyeurs, in an intimate moment.

I love how the flowers are like negative images, making windows to the girl's features. Uncanny. You have to look very deeply to see the parts of her face, in some images.
