Although my art may not relate directly to Ray's in terms of spiritual involvement, I am interested in her themes and her aesthetic qualities.
Elena Ray picks her subjects carefully and manipulates her photographs in ways that allow that person's personality to shine through. I am interested in the exploration of personality, and I feel that my work is successful in externalising the personality of a person through flowers, colours and nature.
Her work often involves the overlaying of images, including natural forms (moons, flowers) over people and faces.
Her colour schemes are vivid and powerful, using pops of colour to draw the eye.
I love how her use of colour is vibrant, and she is not afraid to mix warm and cool tones.
This piece especially gripped me because of its use of natural forms.
I am specifically interested in the imagery that includes nature, such as this piece - the way that she is digitally overlaying her imagery reminds me of my own work, such as the piece below.
We are using similar digital affects, which can distort the colours of the imagery in surreal ways, often blues and greens. The colours are inverting - aka, becoming the complete opposite on the colour wheel. This makes the image look "wrong" or "broken" like an error in most cases, but using organic shapes such as flowers makes it soft and elegant.
